 UH OH!
Gang. Wow. I am sorry for the confusion. I messed up by telling you to put it under their most recent post. I meant under my most recent post.

SO, lets try that one again.  Aside from the frustration we got kind of a free week?

AGAIN, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE CRITIQUE FROM THE POST BELOW.
HOWEVER, PLACE YOUR CRITS UNDER !THIS! COMMENT SECTION.

There is no need to add back your comment section on your 84 Blog.

Sorry guys, that was my bad!

ABOUT OUR BOOKS
The art secretary has made an account for all of us. After a few looks and crits of the books and finalized layouts, we will all upload them to her account and she will pay for them. We still have some time so keep working on them!

This work is all looking incredible and you should all be proud! I am!

  1. • BRITTANY: I am critiquing the third picture down. You are looking at a building/house from the front right side of the house at an angle. The paint is chipping, the roof is collapsing, and it seems to be uninhabited. On the window there is writing that says “you are beautiful”. This would not seem to be appropriate for this setting as the building is derelict. This is saying that just because this building is not immaculate and conventionally beautiful that it is somehow below society’s standards. This photo series could be seen as a commentary on lower class individuals and seeing them as not beautiful.
    • CAITLIN: I am critiquing the first picture. There is a little girl in a flower dress wearing a little girl’s sandal on one foot and a big work boot on the other foot. Because the boot is so large she has to kind of lean over to the side and adjust how she would normally stand to accommodate the boot. This could be interpreted that she has to change or self or compromise herself to accommodate this boot belonging to a man. It could be seen that she is unable to fill his shoes and is too small to carry the weight of it. You have also cut off her head and are focused on the body so she has no identity.
    • CHRISTINE: I am critiquing the first picture. In this photograph there are not really any discernable objects. You can slightly make out a blue towel in the upper left hand quadrant of the photo, encircled by a background of bright white. The bottom section of the photo is different shades of gray that appears to be composed of several objects, but you cannot tell what they are. The upper right hand section of the photo is black with some kind of grey smear. This photograph is similar to color field painting and appeals to aesthetics. There is very good use of diagonals to separate the picture into different sections and follows the law of thirds with how the sections are split up. The harsh line where the white and black meet holds your eye and lets you observe the dramatic shift from one part to another.
    • CRYSTAL: no new posts.
    • DANIELLE: I am critiquing the seventh photograph. There is a hand in the photo holding a paintbrush. The shadow of the hand and brush can be seen in the picture. On the brush is water being manipulated on a concrete surface. This photograph shows the subject actually manipulating water and having fulfilled her will for it. The other photos allow the water to do what it does naturally and just get captured by the lens. This shows that the subject feels the water is something that can be used and manipulated as she chooses it to be. She is exploiting the nature of water and demanding its cooperation with her, as it cannot resist or deny what she is doing.

  2. • ELAINE:I am critiquing the fifth photograph. There is a white ceiling with a light hanging from the middle. The ceiling is composed of boards arranged in a diagonal pattern going out from the center out of the picture plane. The light hanging from the center is a fairly large light bulb contained within a cage-like structure. This photograph is very appealing compositionally. While all of the lines meet very near the center of the photo, you are instantly brought down to the lower right hand third of the picture by the hanging light. The diagonals allow for movement throughout the photograph and do not lead you out of the picture frame merely because there is so much going on.
    • GINA: I am critiquing photograph number 43. On the top third line there is a street sign. The name of the street is Mediterranean Dr. The design of the sign itself is an olive green background. On the bottom there are diamonds in a different green and yellow going all the way across. Across the top is a deep red border going from side to side with a half circle in the middle. In the background there are a few palm trees on the right hand side and an open sky on the left. The style that the sign is done in is reminiscent of styles that may be found in a place such as the Mediterranean. This seems to be creating an idealistic reality to contain a sign for a street with this name.
    • IAN: I am critiquing the first photo. There is a female subject standing in the middle of what appears to be two book aisles in a store. She is wearing a button up paid shirt and looks pleasant with a smile on her face. In her right hand she is holding a mask of her face that is attached to a wooden stick. The expression on the mask-face is one of disbelief. It seems as though this is saying that the subject tries to appear to be ok with things around her and how things are done, but is hiding this part that is in utter disbelief as to what is happening. This dichotomy of emotions leads us to believe that she is living a double life, the one of authenticity and disbelief in the actions going on around her and the surface appearance that everything is going well and fine. This is suggesting that she is being inauthentic to how she views the world in order to be a particular way to those around her.
    • JOSH: I am critiquing the first photograph. There are multiple feet and legs covering the entirety of the photograph. The legs appear to be from the same person but there are three different kinds of shoes being worn in different instances of the legs. This could mean that the person being photographed is not quite sure of where they want to be, or even how they want to be portrayed. The layering of the legs makes the photo appear hectic and suggests the indecisiveness of the subject, like they are trying on different things to figure out what is right for them.
    • JULEAH: In the picture I am critiquing there is a female figure stand atop a cabinet like structure. She is draped over shelves on the wall, or seeming to climb onto them. On the selves there are cleaning supplies and other common household items. This completely objectifies the female figure in the picture as she is place among the items and has become a part of the many useless household objects. Her body is draped in such a way as to make it seem limp and useless for her.

  3. • KYLA: I am critiquing the first picture. There is the head of a female. In the center of her forehead a zit has been circled in brown eyeliner. She is not directly looking at the audience. Her eyes are downcast and averting the gaze. This makes the subject appear to be ashamed of her appearance and allow the viewer to unabashedly observe her without her being active in it. In all the other photos she is actively looking out and confronts the viewers gaze. It seems as though something has changed within her, or she was very sleepy.
    • LINDSEY: I am critiquing the second picture. The photo is of a solid field of green. Inside the green are pockets of air that appear to be green, although they are just air. Since these objects are perceived as something they are not, seen as green instead of not seen due to the reflection of the substance around them they cannot be experienced in their true essence. We see the air pockets as something they are not and deny them authenticity, much as we do when a person that is surrounded by others doing something, we see them as a part of that and not just reflecting the attributes of the surroundings.
    • MELISSA: I am critiquing the second photograph down. In the center of the photograph there is a female subject. All around her there are colorful lines being drawn across the picture plane. The female subject is blurred and out of focus. She is looking off somewhere out of the picture plane is not engaging the viewer. The look on her face is either one of being startled or wonderment. She seems to be caught in a whirlwind of emotion and is just along for the ride. It does not appear as if she has any control of what is going on around her. This suggests that she is weak or not in control of her own self, body and mind.
    • NICK: I am critiquing the photograph of the tire that says “liberator”. There is the tire to a vehicle in much of the photograph, being cut off on all sides except for the top where you see a strip of asphalt. The brand of the tire is liberator. This name suggests that you can use this product to liberate something, perhaps yourself if you use this item. This takes away the control of humans to be able to liberate themselves through methods that do not require material objects. It suggests that this tire allows you to liberate yourself through using it and escaping your environmental circumstances, and not attributing liberation to something that can be done on a purely mental level.

  4. • SARAH: I am critiquing the photo where the subjects are fifty-one feet apart. The subject in the background appears to be wearing red bottoms and a white top. The subject in the foreground is wearing a blue top and denim bottoms. The foreground subject is sitting on a sidewalk cross-legged reading a book. She is unresponsive to her surroundings of trees and buildings and is engrossed completely in the book she has in her hands. This shows that the subject in the foreground has separated herself enough from the subject in the background and can focus on activities for herself that she decides on her own are enjoyable. She is creating her own identity through her choices and is not persuaded by others to figure it out for her.
    • SKY: I am critiquing the sixth photograph down. The objects in the photographs are indistinguishable. The top portion of the photograph is a field of blue. On the bottom section there are shades of blue and grey. The middle left of the photograph appears to be buildings of different sizes and colors, primarily green, yellow and brown. The middle right of the photo appears to be comprised of billboards. This photograph can be seen as commentary on industrialization and consumer society. Billboards are typically used to help advertise and sell objects, and the buildings in the background could be places where things are bought, or just a sign of development and progress. Since the photo is blurred it seems that we can no longer see the point of what these items once stood for. It is now out of focus and indiscernible, but we can still speculate that they are still there, we just can’t see all the details of what they mean.
    • SOUNG: I am critiquing the fourth picture. In this photo there is a foot that is being painted on. In the photo you can see the hand and the paintbrush being used to do the painting. Underneath the top, black layer you can see other layers of color, both orange and purple, showing that the foot has been used prior to the time that is documented. This is suggestive of using the body as a tool.

  5. • ALEX: (Image name: yellow2.jpg) The image is a very close up shoot of some kind of preserved produce. The colors are drippy, foggy, and bright all at the same time. Looking at the image makes me feel like I’m diving into a jar of pickles. I’m not sure if that’s what the actual content is but it has a very fleshy, liquid, and slimy quality to it. The kind of liquid quality and the color tone of the image remind me a bit of Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ. (Without all the controversy and other connotations that, that image comes with.) Only that, I’m intrigued by the colors, the way the light hits certain spots, and the texture but I’m not fully aware of the subject yet. It is easier to look at this image aesthetically. As the image is digitally made it does not fall really fall under any of the modern and post modern photographic principles but it does hold principles that are in both of the realms of thinking. The subject is not physically or digitally altered (to my knowledge), but rather it is an intimate image of preserved produce, forcing the viewer to look at the textures, colors, shadows, and highlights that would have been there naturally if they looked at it through a magnifying glass.
    • BRITTANY: (Image name: Beautiful7.jpg) The photo contains what looks like a rundown residential property that has been abandoned. The house looks to have a light paint color, probably white, gray, or beige. The windows are boarded up and on one of the windows is a board that has been painted partially with a solid dark color. On that patch of color are the words “You are beautiful” that have been applied using spray paint. Just seeing the image I wonder why the house has been left. Was there some sort of personal tragedy there, could it have been a force of nature, or maybe an accident that forced the people living there to leave? I also wonder if the words spray painted on the boarded window was there before or if it was painted there with the sole purpose of trying to make a statement about the rundown property; calling it beautiful. If it was the latter, an ethical question would arise. Is it ethical to go on a property, despite it being abandoned, and “touch it” or deface it (however, you want to look at it)? Regardless of that, I find the image to be quite beautiful and fills the artist’s intent.
    • CAITLIN: (Image name: melting.jpg) The following is a picture of a high-heeled shoe that with green and pink tones that looks to have been altered using Photoshop so that it looks like it is melted metal or plastic that has been cast and frozen in space. While the image is appealing and interesting modernist principles we scrutinize it because it is an invented idea, an alteration of what is real, made into the unreal. While I appreciate the purism of that idea I do not fully agree with it and I appreciate the out of the box approach of this particular image.
    • CHRISTINE: (Image name: 3699675860_3ec0de9634.jpg) The way the photo is taken I’m not entirely sure what the subject of the image is. I just know that I am intrigued by the light and shadow in the image, along with the bits of blue in the photo. The photo could possibly be of a paper lantern on top of a black, somewhat dusty table. Next to the lamp looks like what is a broken piece of glass that is reflecting an image of lips? I don’t think the image holds any ethical questions as the subject does not seem to be personal. Rather it is more likely to be looked at aesthetically.
    • CRYSTAL: (Image name: SDC13610.jpg) The photo has a stack of pizza boxes from Domino’s Pizza. The boxes are set on a dark brown or black table that is surrounded by beige looking kitchen appliances. The boxes could be there because the person is having a party or maybe they have accumulated boxes over time, or possibly they are depressed about something and want to eat a whole bunch of pizza?

  6. • DANIELLE: (Image name: 100_2890.jpg) The photo is of gray concrete with a speck of some kind of stone or leaf on the ground. There is a shadow of a hand in the back of the photo and the concrete is being painted with water by a brush. The photo brings to mind the struggles of day to day life. How we try to alter our own reality but never seem to fully get hold of what we desire. Life is like painting with water, we try and try, but without pigment and a bounding element, our actions are left to dry, evaporate, and vanish.
    • ELAINE: (Image name: P6070210.JPG) The photo of some type of metal covering with thin slats of light seeping through. The way the image is taken, I’m not entirely sure as to what kind of covering it is only, that it is made of some type of metal. I find this image intriguing because it looks both claustrophobic and airy at the same time. The image is of something real, it is not altered physically, rather the artist is directing your view to what they want you to see, which is the design and texture of the covering, which they themselves, might find visually appealing.
    • GINA: (Image name: P1010343.jpg) The photo contains a beige-peach fence with various colored dots and circles on it that look like bubbles. On the fence is a pink promotional sign that says: “150 feet ahead.” Behind the fence are large trees and a building and in front of the fence is a street sign that says: “Andy Rosse Ln.” It is hard to look at this picture ethically or through feminist ideals. Rather, it is far easier to critique it aesthetically. Despite the photo being digital I believe it holds the modernist principle of not being altered. The viewer is given a snapshot of what is in that particular location at that particular time.
    • IAN: (Image name: Jamiemask.jpg) The photo contains a girl with short hair wearing a red checked shirt. The girl is surrounded by shelves of books indicating that she is in some type of book store. The girl is smiling and next to her is her face, with a different expression, on what looks like a popsicle stick. The face on the stick lacks eye balls and the innards of the mouth. The image can be looked at in several ways. The image is definitely altered, and added upon and the artist is not trying to hide that fact. In fact, they seem to be glorifying in the ability to create a different scenario, world, whatever, through photographic means. Through the use of subject, we are able to see different sides of the individual photographed. What is the real and what is mask?
    • JOSH: (Image name: knivesout.jpg) The photo has several sharp knives with black handles on top of a white surface. The knives make me think of something brash and unpleasant. Knives typically portray a negative forceful feel. It does not bring to mind happy thoughts, rather it makes you think about something carnal or violent.
    • KYLA: (Image name: day49.jpg) The image portrays a girl with brown drawings on her face, that circle, cross over, or showcase zits. On the forehead in the word “POW,” as if it means to blast the zit away. It brings to mind comic strips and some feminist theory. The woman in the picture is not idealized, she is what she is and she does not try to be anything else. She is unlike what women have been portrayed as in much of art’s history. She does not look vulnerable, she looks strong and somewhat abrasive. She has identity.
    • LINDSEY: (Image name: 108_1899.JPG) The photo is a sage/jade green tone of what looks like a glass paper weight. You can see something reflected at the bottom of the image, but it is hard to make out. The content of the image is not important. What is important is the different elements within the photo. The photo acts in a way as an abstract painting. The color and shape are the most important things in the image. Whether there is meaning behind them, is up to the viewer to decide.

    ReplyDelete
  7. • MELISSA: (Image name: DSC_0241-1.jpg) The photo is a haze of blue and green light that creates various lines and shapes that cross each other at different angles and points. The photo reminds light art and painting both. There is expression through the color and strokes of light but it is expression that is subjective to the viewer.
    • NICK: (Image name: 57.jpg) The photo is of a part of a car. The car is a creamy white tone with the word “Regal” on it. The word is portrayed through the use of script font that is elegant and has long lines.
    • SARAH: (Image name: 53.jpg) The photo is of a girl sitting on the ground reading a book. She is wearing a blue shirt, shorts, and slippers. Behind her is a pathway lined with trees and buildings. In the distance is another figure standing on the pathway in what looks to be a pink skirt. The girl reading the book looks like she is in her own world, enjoying the outdoors, unaware of her surroundings. She stands out because she is doing an unlikely on the sidewalk; lounging with a book… while the girl in the distance is doing what is normally done on the sidewalk; walking.
    • SKY: (Image name: fireworks-4.jpg) The photo has a blue background and has various colored dots everywhere. The picture is distorted and pixilated to the point where you can’t make out the subject. You are then forced to look at the image for its, color and the shapes that it creates. It is taking the photo and making it into a digital painting that can be interpreted subjectively by the viewer.
    • SOUNG: The photo is of a foot on top of a white shirt. The foot has orange paint on it and seems to be being painted orange by a brush. The foot will inevitably be placed on the white fabric below it. The image is quite poetic and is suggestive of using the body to imprint on a surface, maybe implying man’s inherent nature to be inventive and take charge of his/her own destiny.

  8. Alex- A Story in Color (first yellow picture)
    - The photograph is what looks like yellow woven yarn. I think that this is a good example of the modernist theory. She doesn’t add anything extra to the photo. She zooms in on the fabric that she is using, in this case, it looks like yellow yarn, and shows the delicate details naturally.
Brittany- series with boy on car (first photo)
    - The photograph shows a Caucasian boy standing on top of a car in a bathing suit, who has his hands close to his face in a position where he looks like he’s holding up animal paws. The car is a convertible and looks relatively new. Behind the boy is a ‘no parking’ sign. The photo seems like it can be best described by post-modernism. The problem that I think the photo is trying to solve is that photos are taken without any meaning. They are predictable and you can almost generalize their meaning of existence. With Brittany’s series, she’s taking what would be an ordinary scenario and twisting it so that the photo defies reality. She wants to break the boredom barrier and give meaning and excitement to what would be an ordinary photograph.
Caitlyn- shoes with sole (first photo)
    - The photograph is of a Caucasian girl wearing a flower dress, a sandal on one foot, and a huge boot on the other, while holding a handful of pine needles. She’s standing outside what looks like a white house with red shutters. I want to go towards the Marxist theory because Caitlyn isn’t trying to “treat it like a privileged artifact” but to help other understand these photos as evidence of displaying truth. This photo says to me that the girl isn’t defined by her girlish figure or outfit, that she’s still the same person, even when you place a humongous boot on her foot that cover most of her leg.
Crystal- The best idea ever: (I’m choosing this photo because there really aren’t any new photos and this one best shows what I want to describe)
    - The photograph is of a bag of Doritos, a crumpled up burger/sandwich bag, and her purse, with cigarettes coming out of her purse. The Doritos bag is half orange and half green with the label saying “Collision- 2 flavors- 1 bag. Pizza Cravers.” I’m choosing a position of feminism. Crystal wants to express that as a woman, she doesn’t want the label of being skinny and having to starve herself. She indulges in foreign, guilty pleasures and is still able to keep a fit, slim figure. The food and crumpled bag on the car seat says that she is someone who eats on the go, and isn’t afraid of the consequences of eating while driving. The fact that the food items are located next to her purse allows the viewer to see that she is a woman and including the cigarettes says that she doesn’t necessarily care for the label that was bestowed upon her and lives her life as she wishes, and not how society has carefully crafted her mind to think how she should live it.
Danielle- 84 drops of h2o- I’m going to try and do my best to describe these photos without the artist’s statement, but it’s going to be hard without knowing/remembering the artist intentions of the photos (third photo).
    - This is a photograph of ice that is seen through a clear, plastic straw. I’m going to say that this is a modernism photograph because she enjoys water for what it is. She doesn’t manipulate the photo or change it any way. She is just simply documenting the beauty of water in its most natural state.

  9. Elaine- 84º farenheight (wood tropical ceiling)
    - The photograph is of a tropical ceiling of what I think is an umbrella. It’s made out of finished wood beams and dried palm leaves, tied in the center with rope. This is another example of a modernist photograph. There isn’t anything taken away or added to these photographs, but only displays the pure beauty of the content.
    Ian- (first photo)
    - The photograph is a woman standing in a book store wearing a red plaid shirt and she’s holding a mask with her face, in a different expression as the face of the mask. Her face on her body is smiling while her face on the mask looks a bit demonic, with the eyes empty and the mouth open, but it’s empty as well. I’m going to use a feminist approach when talking about Ian’s photo. Feminism is a very complex subject but what I’ve been able to sum up in a very broad term is that women are breaking the border of stereotypes and that’s what I believe Ian is trying to say in his photographs. The person holding the mask is what the world isn’t seeing… the real woman but the mask is showing the world what she is wanting everyone to see her by, stereotypically. The mask is in a way society’s rules, hiding the true self under a false identity.
    Josh- 84 photos/ 84 songs (Electioneering)
    - The photograph is a much zoomed in picture of Senator Sarah Palin. She looks mid sentence and it’s a little blurry. When I want to categorize what I feel Josh’s intentions were for these series, I want to say he took the road of post modernism with an influence of multiculturalism. He took this photo of the television of Palin and it makes you wonder why he paired it with a Radiohead song. I’m not too familiar with the background of the band, but as an uneducated spectator, I’m guessing that he’s trying to relate our current culture to the audience of the Radiohead listeners. (I have no clue if I’m even remotely close, but I tried.)
Juleah- The Doll House (fourth row from the end, picture on the left)
    - The photograph is Juleah laid across the handle bar of a treadmill in a garage between two cars. This series is defiantly best described by the feminist theory. Women are defiantly depicted as doll-like figures. Her body is deformed in a way that looks unnatural and doll like.
    Kyla-Zits (second photo)
    - The photograph is Kyla standing in her bathroom. You can see her shower/tub in the background. She’s wearing a white cotton shirt with her haired pulled back in a pony tail. She has all her zits circled with eye liner but one right in the middle of her eyes has an arrow pointing right to it, like it was a third eye. This is defiantly a post modern theory photograph. She took the subject matter and added eye liner to define her message.
    Lindsey- Going Green (first photo)
    - The photograph is a pot of cactuses. There are three. One that has a lot of thorns, one that is more smooth and rounded with long thorns, and one that looks redder and fuzzier. I don’t think you can get a better description of modernism. She basically took a picture of the cactuses and that was all that was needed to get across the natural beauty of the color of green that the cactuses have.
Melissa- Paint by Shutter (first photo)
    - The photograph is of... well it’s a bunch of blue and green squares that just look like buildings that are blasted by light. This is a pretty good example of post modernism because she took her camera and manipulated the subject matter to create a new photograph.
Nick- Car Design (eighth from the bottom)
    - The photograph is of a gray Mustang, a newer model that is zoomed in so that all you can see is the trunk, bumper, tail light and logo. The multiculturalism theory can be applied to this photo and this series because he’s taking the natural beauty of the car and taking the picture at a strange angle and then creating a great photograph. This theory is great in the automobile industry and advertising because it shows the true beauty of the vehicle without adding a lot of unneeded changes.

  10. Sarah- Separation (fifty-five feet)
    - The photograph is Sarah sitting down on a sidewalk on campus reading a book and her sister is fifty five feet behind her. This photo reminds me of the Postcolonial Theory. The definition for the theory is “an interest in the aftermath of the struggle for independence.” The whole reason why Sarah started this series was because she was interested in how it would feel/look to add space between her and her sister.
    Sky- Pixelation (first photo)
    - The photograph is of what I think is a sign that says only. This is defiantly a post-modernism photo because he’s taking a normal photo and pixilating it so that you can’t really see what the picture is but individual colors.
Soung- Mess on My Shirt (last photo on bottom row)
    - The photograph is of Soung’s foot that is painted with orange and purple while lying on a white sheet. You can see the brush painting the bottom of his foot. I’m going to have to say this is another modernist picture because he’s documenting the process of him making a mess on his shirt. There isn’t any added baggage or changes to the pictures. Just pure documentation.

  11. ALEX: (image name: yellow3) This photo is of a yellow color with obvious soft texture and shadows throughout. These shadows display a great amount of depth within the picture. This photo from afar shows an up close view of a piece of some material. From up close it is difficult to make out the image, as it forces you to examine the fine details and color of the image. It seems as if this photo has not been digitally enhanced and shows the exact color, detail, and values of the object. I would maybe categorize this photo with the realist theory since it is a simple depiction of something with no manipulation, although the fact that it is so close up the composition becomes very abstract (almost like a color field painting) and forces the viewer to react to what they are looking at.
BRITTANY: (image name: Yoga6) This is a black and white photograph of a girl that appears to be meditating on a sidewalk and behind her is traffic passing by. It looks as if the girl is in her own personal meditative world and everyone else passing by is just a blur. She is very peaceful and doesn't take notice of these cars passing her. This definitely fits the artists intent placing a hustle and bustle world next to a peaceful world.
CAITLIN: (image name:100_3168) This photo is of a blue sneaker on a gravel pavement. The shoe is turned on its side and it appears as if there is a shadow created from it that takes almost the exact same form as the shoe. Although from looking at where the light source is coming from, I'm not certain that this is a shadow or a stain on the pavement. This photograph plays with your mind by making you question what you are seeing. It also deals with the truth of photography and how what you are seeing isn't what you are REALLY seeing. It almost seems as if the shoe is levitating from the ground creating a shadow. The shoe alone on the pavement like this creates a feeling of loneliness and displacement.
CHRISTINE: (image name: 3698880555_562ef0df1a) This photo is of some form of lamp. The image focuses in on the area where the light is coming from. The background is very dark and out of focus but the lamp is very sharp and has much contrast of the dark lines against the bright yellow light. The diagonals in this photo make for a great composition, and the light seems to absorb quietly into the environment. The reflection of the light on the glass seem to point that the light is flowing outwards. It is a very peaceful image.
CRYSTAL (image name: SDC13624-1) This photo is from the subject's viewpoint. On the left of the image, the subject's hand is there holding a cup and chips. On the bottom of the image is her foot. The photo is slightly blurred to give it a sense of motion since according to the title "Eating on the Go." The food items are the largest of the subjects shown in comparison to the body parts, most likely to show significance according to the subject of the blog.
DANIELLE: (image name: 100_2756) This image is a mirror with drops of what on it. The reflection of the water and the light fixture is seen as well. The camera is shooting up at the mirror and almost creates a strange optical illusion, making you question what you are looking at. The mirror creates the illusion that the drops of water are floating and their reflections appear to be shadows. This image also deals with the argument of truth in photography and the idea that what you think you are seeing isn't what you are actually seeing.
ELAINE: (image name: P6140262) This image is of a ceiling with three trays cut out in it with a mosaic-like image on them. The pattern of the mosaic is striking with its zig zag shape and complementing purple and yellow tiles. The vantage point makes the trays appear smaller as they move away from the image, and the composition is very strong slicing it into thirds. The reflections on the trays give the image a great deal of depth, creating an illusion that there is another image being captured by the tile. This picture could even be included in Elaine's "Duplicity" book.

  12. GINA: (image name: P1010383) This photo is of a street sign that reads "Flamingo Rd." The color of the sign is a vibrant cerulean blue with the background containing a pattern of bright green trees. The definition that accompanies the photo is very interesting and almost tells a story in this image as well as the others in the series. The way this is photographed almost makes it resemble an actual flamingo. The iron post could be the tall legs and the sign is the body of the flamingo. The text used also plays with the truth in photography by the word flamingo being placed on a sign.
IAN: (image name: Lomask) This photo is of a girl on the left and a digitally created mask of her face on the right. Her facial expression on the left is very relaxed and passive, but her expression on her mask is very aggressive. This shows that this girl comes of as very passive, but maybe her true personality is the opposite. But why is the "mask" aggressive & her face not? Since it is a mask it should be the exterior of her personality, and this one is VERY angry looking. So is her true personality passive and the personality she gives off aggressive?
JOSH: (image name: kidA) This photo is very luminous. It is shot looking up at a window and its blinds. The blinds are open and the light from the outside it seeping into the dark interior. On both sides of the photo are black walls with the window and blinds in the middle. This a very simple concept and obvious if you observe it for a while, but at first it appeared to me as a skyscraper. The blinds resembled the windows of a skyscraper with a reflection of light on it. It reminds me of Andreas Gursky's "May Day V."
JULEAH: (image name: JMC_Doll_06) In this photo the subject is posed almost slumped over with her arms stiff as if they are a dolls arms holding the paper. The paper reads "I AM NOT BARBIE." Her head is down as if she is sad or ashamed. She is dressed in a pale blue dress and has makeup on her face. I would critique this photo, and the series, according to the feminist theory. This theory deals with gender as a way that society expects you to act or feel. Many dolls of our recent culture (Barbie in particular & numerous others) are extremely gendered. They reflect a body, face, style, etc. that our society expects of women. Her photos of herself as the doll reflects this very much. They are very similar to Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills where she posed herself as a woman from black and white film stills. She put herself in various stereotypical female roles that our society has molded for us. I think this photo is very powerful in that she is molding herself into the doll and its characteristics. Her paper that she holds is a rejection of this stereotype that our society and Barbie has created. Her attire is similar to that of a doll, but her body language shows that she is unhappy with this stereotype. She holds the paper in order to convey her thoughts because she is a plastic, material object & cannot speak for herself.

  13. KYLA: (image name: day51) This photo shows the subject with areas of her face where she has blemishes circled with a pen. The background is of her bathroom and the photo is shot head on. It is very documentary according to her series. She has circled areas on her face and one in the middle has an arrow pointing at the blemish. She has a very blank look on her face and is close up to the viewer allowing her face to be seen and observed. She seems somewhat confident in her posture and gaze. The arrow drawn points at the blemish as if its making sure that it is being seen.
LINDSEY: (image name: apple1) This photo is of a bright blue sky background with a bright green apple taking over about half of the composition. The apple with the sky appears very sublime and both seem one with each other in this image. The apple almost seems to resemble the globe floating amongst the sky. In reference to her series subject, I think this image is the most powerful. "Going green" means to be environmentally friendly and practicing environmentally beneficial activities. The main focus is on the Earth and keeping it healthy, but the Earth and its environment are still sublime over human life. This photo truly depicts this idea.
NICK: (image name: 16s) This image is of the back of a corvette with the corvette symbol being the main subject. Underneath the symbol is a reflection of the blue sky and the clouds within it. You can see a little above the tail light and see the sky behind it with a building to the right. The composition is being split horizontally by the lines from the car. This symbol is so well known among us as Americans and the reflection of the sky seems to glorify this and the car as a whole. This reminds me of how many Pop artists such as Warhol, Rosenquist, and Hamilton used commercial logos in their works.
SARAH: (image name: 37) This image is of the subject walking away from her sister, getting farther and farther from her. Here, she is walking along green grass. She holds an umbrella and is looking off slightly to her right. Her sister is way back in the background and there are a few areas with objects that separate the two. She seems to be standing alone from her sister and developing her own identity. This reminds me of the post colonial theory and struggling for an independent identity. This photo begins to show the subject in complete focus and the true sole subject of the image. Her sister her is almost out of sight.
SKY: (image name: commercial4) This photo appears to be an extremely pixelated image of a woman. She is sitting on something and facing down with her legs bent back as if she is about to sit up. This is very similar to Seurat's paintings, especially the ones of women. This is a very interesting and innovative way of looking at photographs. It is similar to how Thomas Ruff (mentioned in the article) and how he manipulates his digital images. Aesthetically, many purists believe that this is not considered photography or art simply because of its manipulation.
SOUNG: The image I am critiquing is the one of the hand with the yellow paint on it. It is of a hand with yellow paint on it with a black background. Many of the photos in this series show the shirt and the paint on it, but this one is very powerful because it shows the actual artists hand about to apply paint onto the shirt. The photo has great contrast and has a pretty well balanced composition.

  14. -ALEX- I am looking at a photo from the red series. It is a large image of what appears to be a shag rug or possibly a tickle me elmo doll. It is furry and appears to be soft. This photo allows the viewer to see an up close image of this furry, soft texture. The fact that it is red is interesting because red isn't often imagined as soft in the human mind.

-BRITTANY- I have tried numerous times to open your page, but the internet times out every time I attempt to open it.

-CAITLIN- I am looking at the most recent photo which shows a girl wearing a flower dress, one sandal and one oversized boot. The boot appears to be added to the photo via photoshop. The photo could mean several different things. For example, perhaps the boot is being used to cover up an insecurity the girl has with her right foot.

-CHRISTINE- I am looking at the fourth photo down. It appears to be some type of window with a florescent light behind it. The light allows the viewer to see what surrounds it. There is mystery behind this photo because the viewer cannot tell exactly what is going on. Maybe only the artist is intended to know the meaning or maybe the meaning is left up for the viewer to decide.

-CRYSTAL- I am looking at the photo with the caption "a legend indeed." It is a zoomed in photo of a domino's pizza box. The photo is a part of the series "gluttony." Maybe the choice of the domino's pizza box, which contains the colors red, white, and blue, is commentary of the growing obesity rate in America. The artist may have chosen to zoom into the box in order to convey a large scale feel.

-DANIELLE- I am looking at the 3rd photo down which appears to be the inside of a water bottle. The photo is confusing at first, because it is difficult to know exactly what you are looking at, but that adds to it. We can't really look inside water with a camera, maybe this is an interesting take of what a camera can capture from the inside of a water container.

-ELAINE- I am looking at the second most recent photo on your blog. It appears to be the ceiling at some sort of beach resort. I see a seashell at the bottom right of the image. This image can be thought of as a memory of a relaxing time from the artist's past.

-GINA- I am looking at the photo for the sign "pearl street." In the image I see a stop sign, dead end sign, and a street sign for pearl street. A pearl is difficult to find and usually thought of as a "diamond in the rough" type thing. The sign mixed with DEAD END and STOP conveys that.

-IAN- I am looking at your most recent upload. The image contains a female on the right side of the photo with a mask of her face without eyes or a mouth to the left. The mask could be thought of as an alter ago or maybe a just a different, darker side of the individual in the photo.

-JULEAH- I am looking at the photograph located at the very bottom of the page. In this photo we see a woman lying on the ground with her eyes wide open, but at the same time she seems completely out of it. The photo portrays and image of loneliness and abandonment.

    ReplyDelete
  15. -KYLA- I am looking at the most recent photo which shows the artist facing the camera, looking down with a circle around a zit on the face. The circle in the image draws the viewer's attention to the zit making light of a common problem among young-ish people. Usually people go out of their way to cover up a zit in order to avoid feeling self conscience. The artist bravely shows off what others would consider a blemish.

-LINDSEY- I am looking at the photo with the cactuses. The viewer sees 2 large cacti with large and medium sized spikes, and a series of small cacti connected almost like a bush. The cactus are out of their element by being held in a small plant container. Their captivity could play into extra meaning behind the photo.

-MELISSA- I am looking at the most recent upload. What the actual image is is not clear because the photo was taken with a long exposure. The image is reminiscent of a city scape at night. The greens mixed in with the blues complement each other.

-NICK- I am looking at the photo that is on the right column, second row down. It is the back of a red car with the word classic on the vehicle. The ironic thing is how the word classic is written on a new vehicle. This photo could be considered commentary on false advertising, or the common practice of extorting the truth in order to sell something.

-SARAH- Looking at photo 55. It shows the artist 55 feet away from her sister. The artist is reading a book while sitting on the ground. I am not sure what her sister is doing in the background. The fact that she is not looking back is a statement. She is separate from her sister who she is frequently compared to. She is establishing an independence for herself in this photo.

-SKY- Looking at the photo at the top of the page. It appears to be the image of a sign on a street near a building. The image is purposely very pixelated to the point of the image being unrecognizable. The artist may feel like the details of the surrounding environment is unimportant in the photograph. Perhaps he wants to see the shapes involved with the composition instead of the viewer being distracted by other things.

-SOUNG- I am looking at the third photo from the left, on the top row. My eye gravitated to this photo among the surrounding images. It shows a foot covered in purple paint, along with touches of orange and black paint. The paint is primarily on the bottom of the foot. It is difficult to understand the implications of this image because it flows with a series of other photos.

What I can see from this picture is about the color which is not in common. The color has an emotion and a feeling. The ocher cotton in this picture has the touching. This picture makes me feel the warming. The colors of his project have much more things than normally thought of the color.

    Brittany’s photo
The ruined house in this photo is really creepy. It has creepy vibe. I was trying to find ruined house like this picture, but I couldn’t find at all. I hope to know where it is in order to visit here for my book project. I want to go in there too. I deem her idea is about putting some of object to unusual place. If she put something which is common for life inside the ruined house, it will manage her subject well.

    Catlin’s photo
This picture is really good at matching her concept with her series. The adult size of shoes was not fitting for children’s foot. But I feel this picture shows me the dream of child which is the growing of child. I feel like this child tells me I am not a kid. I am thinking what you thinking like the adult. This picture is really good. I love it.

    Christine’s photo
I feel that she is just focusing on the illumination skill in the photography. According to the lighting, the photo can be changed with different picture, although it was pictured in same place. I love that she delineated the lighting as photo. The lighting is in everywhere, and it has no shape and color. But she gives the shape and colors on the lighting. It is really good idea.

Her photo is the concept of her lifestyle about the diet. It is so personal. I love her concept. It is her life. No one can touch her style. This is my style. I feel like this. This picture is really good for her concepts. Her picture seems to be a caricature and a magazine picture for diet. But the problem is the people who didn’t know her. There is no meaning of her concepts; no matter what I have eaten, I am skinny. If this picture will show her skinny body, I would be better.

    Danielle
Water has no shape and color. But she gives water the shape and the color. I love her concept. The pouring of water was changed with the concentric movement on the table. It shows me the water of beauty is various.

People have the duplicity in their mind. When they got mad, their personality will be changed with unexpected reaction. Even thought they are smiling to somebody, it is possible they are crying inside their mind. This picture shows us the duplicity of mind. I love this concept.

    Josh
I love what he is doing for his project. It looks like the cover of music album. The each of title was related with the photo as well. The photography is the capturing the moment. I mean it has no the feeling of movement and action. But he brings out the unusual aspect of photography, that is movement and activity of the photo, his picture has the action. This picture has a feeling of the movement.

    Juleah
Her expression of face represents the demise of doll to me. She doesn’t have any vividness like doll. I feel the purposeless life for modern people like doll. Her picture reminds me the purposeless life has no vividness, achievement, and vitality.

    Kyra
Zits are quite nasty one, but she has depth comprehension on it. This picture make me thought that do I raise up than before. My face will be getting to be older than before. My face was in changing. But how about my mind and thought? This picture is reminds me I need to develop me for better life.

    Lindsey
The colors of green have the natural, fresh and comfortable feeling. I guess this picture is about the natural feeling to the plant.

    Melissa
This picture looks like the drawing of an impressionist painter. This picture show us the things what we couldn’t seen by eyes. I mean the photo’s eyes, not the eyes of person. This picture is about the unseeing things with eyes. She was changing the things, what we can see, with the unseeing things by our eyes.

    Nick.
I recommend his search nascar.com to find some good material for his photo. It has so simple beauty.

    Sarah
I don’t know about this one. I think if she comes to closer or get away from the camera. It will be better. The picture in same background has not much distinction.

    sky
This picture is hard to understand to me. I understand his concept. But i guess it is too fuzzy. If he makes a little fuzzy photo, not too much, I think it will be better.

Alex-Yellow study #3. The photo is a bright butter colored blanket with contrasts from light to medium dark in the folds. The fabric is woven in a pattern much like sunken baseball diamonds, and gives the viewer a comforting, glowy feeling. The foreground is somewhat blurry while the fabric in the background is quite clear and precise. We can still be warm and fuzzy while not quite knowing true definition. Realist theory is faithful to reality.

Brittany-child study #3. The b&w image is conducive with the environment, as it is a nighttime photo. A shirtless male juvenile is standing on a car trunk. There is a no parking sign in the background, and power poles to the right. The child is mimicking monster poses, and this is accenuated by the blurry, two headed image of the body. Postmodernism theory with exposure techniques and manipulation of image.

Caitlin-shoe study #3 from top. Various styles of athletic shoes are tied to branches of a crepe mrytle tree. The tree is in front of a window and brick wall and gives various texture contrasts. The image gives the term shoe tree a modern approach. Postmodernism theory with the staged portrayal of shoes.

Christine-lighting study #12 from top. A very up close and personal image of an alarm clock. The right background is dark, leading the eye to focus on the clock's face and hands, partially visible. The top of the clock is wavy, implying a time warp. Modernism theory with no alterations

Crystal-gluttony study #3 from top. 3 large red, white, and blue cardboard Domino's pizza boxes are diagonally stacked on a dark surface. In the right background are cream colored cabinets and flooring. The boxes are larger than life, and dwarf anything else, implying that American legends are larger than life. Realist theory because photo is believable.

Danielle-water study #2 from top. Medium gray cement is the surface for various coins, heads and tails. The objects are blurry in the foreground with concise images towards the middle and back. Some are stacked on top of each other and they are lying in water. Droplets on the coins intend to magnify the woes of the American economy. Modernism theory, as there are no alterations to the image.

Gina-mapping study #46. South FL photo of an old aqua and white mobile home to the left with palm trees in the yard. The landscape gives a distance perspective and a homemade white street sign that announces it is Garden Dr. Outdoor lighting on the right anchors the signpost and gives a sense of outdoors and tropical candor. Modernist theory as the photo is objective.

Ian-alter ego study #5 from top. An adult male in the right background is slightly turned away and mysterious. The image is somewhat hazy, with a surprised mask of the male's alter ego in the foreground. The viewer's attention is more focused on the mask so that own assumptions can be fostered of what the model looks like. Postmodernism theory because of the manipulation of subject's eyes.

Josh-Radiohead study "Everything in its Right Place." The b&w image shows a cracked and worn asphalt pavement with large arrows pointing in opposite directions. The arrows are also cracked and deteriorating. The title encourages the viewer to ponder if things are really in its right place, and just how long they've really been there. Realist theory as photo is believable.

Juleah-the doll house study #23 from the top. The b&w double images depict a "doll" on the floor that is mostly obscured by a trash can. The mouth is very obvious. A desk is barely visible in the background. The second photo is a prone female "doll" of head and torso, possibly underneath a metal desk chair. The images convey the isolation and abandonment that we feel. Feminist theory that women don't speak for themselves, and are spoken for.

Kyla-zits study #2 from top. The color headshot photo of an adult female is standing in front of a shower. She has blemishes circled on her face with an arrow pointing to a prominent zit in the center between the eyes. The arrow gives the viewer direction, and makes a statement in a controlling manner. Modernism theory because there are no alterations.

Lindsey-go green study #2 from top. The sage green image of water is riddled with bubbles ranging from tiny to large. The large bubbles are separated into half spherical shapes that appear to be exploding. Most bubbles are reflecting light, and gives the viewer a sense of calmness along with effervescent energy. Conventionalist theory using a fast shutter speed.

Melissa-paint by shutter #3 from top. The night landscape features trees in the background and perhaps a tall building on the right. In the foreground is water with a rapid current reflecting green, orange, and yellow lights. The lights on the shoreline are very energized with high charged emotion. The photo implies to the viewer that our world can be energized, but calm at the same time. Conventionalist theory using a slow shutter speed.

Nick-car design study #3 from top. The double image reflects a red vehicle with a white tire rim trim that only shows the words Montero Sport. The right image is a white vehicle with a handle and running board with the words Santa Fe. The two images tell the viewer that a manmade object is rugged and hot. Modernism theory as there are no alterations.

Sarah-separation study #63'. The landscape image has a large pond in the foreground reflecting trees in the background. There is a barren grass bank on the left side with a disappearing fence. A prone female on her stomach is in the foreground with a minute standing figure in the distance. The photo gives the viewer a sense of reflection on the world. Modernism theory the scene is objective.

Sky-pixelation study #5 from top. The photo is an obscured white three story building with numerous dark windows. The foreground employs shades of green grass. The sky comprises the top portion of the photo. The pixelation is giving the viewer a clear, clean image at the top, and gradually reverts to the dark and unknown. Postmodernism theory using manipulation and exposure techniques.

Soung-mess on my shirt study top series. The color photos reflect a foot in various positions on a white fabric. Using orange, blue, purple and black paint with a brush, the images attempt to create patterns that are then worn or displayed by the artist. The series expounds the point that we can create havoc, but still convey a calm environment. Postmodernism theory as the subject is staged and constructed.

  23. ALEX- I have chosen the first photo in Alex’s 84 series. It is a very large photograph, so large that you must scroll up and down, left and right. The picture is completely filled with the color yellow. It looks like a close up of a yellow sweater. You can see the detail of the threads very clearly. There are ripples in the fabric casting shadows that create a slightly darker yellow. This photo takes on color and what it means. Sure this is the color yellow, but what is it that is yellow? It’s a sweater. It makes you wonder why the photographer chose this particular object to photograph and why they chose this particular color. Because this is a close up of the subject it looks more like a painting than a picture of a subject. It takes the color out of its context. We are confront with the color first, object second. The photographer makes us consider not only the color, but the structure and texture.

BRITTANY- I have chosen the fifth photo down. In this photograph we are confronted with a very old dilapidated house. The photograph is black and white. The roof is missing shingles and looks almost like it was damaged by a fire. The windows are boarded up and someone has spray painted the words “you are beautiful” on the right window. The yard is very well kept, which is not something you usually see with abandoned homes. The words on the window, “you are beautiful,” challenge the viewer because the house is very obviously not beautiful. If forces the viewer to find something beautiful about the photograph, about the house. The structure as a whole is beautiful because it tells a story. The words in the photograph have been placed on something that they wouldn’t usually describe.

CAITLIN- I have chosen to deconstruct the first photograph in Caitlin’s series. In this photo is a girl, whose face we cannot see because it is not in the photograph. She is wearing a dress with bright flowers of different colors. She appears to be standing on a porch of a house. The girl is holding something in her left hand. It could possibly be weeds or flowers. On her right foot she is wearing a sandal and on her left foot she is wearing a large boot. The boot almost consumes her and it is obvious that it is not her shoe. It forces the viewer to confront the question of why? Why is she wearing a shoe that is too large for her? Why is she wearing two different shoes? It is possible that the girl was playing dress up and decided to put on someone else’s shoes. But she only put it on one foot. The shoe is taken out of its original context.

CHRISTINE- I have chosen the second photograph. In this photograph there is a close up of what appears to be a small table on a black flat surface. Behind the ‘table’ are window blinds. The lighting on the small table is very harsh, casting a dark shadow on the right side of the table. The front legs of the table are washed out by the light. There is just barely a reflection of this object on the surface it sits on. It is almost impossible to say if white is the true color of this object because of the lighting. Because it is a close up, the photograph becomes abstract. It causes the viewer to really think about it and try to figure out what the object is.

CRYSTAL-I have chosen the picture of the Whataburger billboard. In this photograph there is a Whataburger billboard but parts of the billboard are swirled and therefore out of focus. The billboard completely fills the photograph from side to side but not top to bottom. The title for this photo is “Open 24 hours. Only in my dreams.” The swirly parts of the billboard suggest that it is in a dreamy state. It makes me think of the photographer daydreaming about Whataburger. This photo is like a critique on the American fast food obsession. There are so many reports about America being obese and this photograph is almost like looking into a dream of someone who regularly eats fast food. It makes the viewer question their own eating habits and the habits of those they encounter every day.

    ReplyDelete
  24. DANIELLE- I have chosen the first photo. In this photo there is a hand at the top of the photo squeezing a sponge. Water is dripping out of the sponge. You can see the water beginning to slide down the hand as it drips from it. In the background you can see grass and a wooden fence, which places the object outside. The subject of this photo is clearly water because the drips of water are the most in focus in the picture. The photo confronts what people are exposed to everyday. Water is all around us, we use water to wash our hands. The photographer is allowing us to examine water in a different light.

ELAINE- I have chosen the thirteenth photo down. In this photo there is a ceiling. It appears to be constructed of rounded wooden beams, grass thatching, and rope to hold the beams. The colors in this photo are neutral and the materials look natural. The ceiling fills the entire photo so that we are focused only on it. Filling the entire photo so that we are not distracted by other elements allows us to consider what exactly the ceiling is. They provide shelter for us and in these photographs we can really consider their purpose.

GINA- I have chosen photo fifteen. This is a picture of a street sign above a stop sign. The street sign is of La Push Road. The photographer has also defined La Push as “a small unincorporated community in Washington, known for its surfing & whale watching, as well as natural beauty.” The photographer gives reason behind the street sign so that the viewer is not left questioning it. It fits very well with her artist statement. These photos create something interesting for us to consider and makes me want to drive around writing down street names then researching them to find their meaning.

IAN- I have chosen the last photo. In this picture there is a girl holding a mask. What is interesting is that the mask if of her face, except the eyes and inside of the mouth are missing. The girl herself has a very straight and solemn look on her face and she is slightly blurred. The mask, which has a strange expression, is in focus. This photo appears to be about the girls “inner.” The mask represents what she feels inside or her other self.

JOSH- I have chosen the photo “National Anthem.” In this series, Josh is putting pictures with song titles. The photo is a picture of fireworks, which are naturally associated with the Fourth of July. So the photo goes very well with its song title. It is very Americana because every Fourth of July, millions of people go out and view a fireworks show, whether they know what is being celebrated or not.

    ReplyDelete
  25. JULEAH- I have chosen the picture where the figure is partially wrapped around the pedals of a piano and her face is covered by her hair. The figure appears to be discarded and broken like a doll, which is what the title of the series suggests. The photo is in black and white, but if you place your mouse over the picture, it becomes color. Allowing no color in the photo makes it much more dramatic. It has a sad feeling to it since the doll like figure is just lying under the piano instead of being put away.

KYLA- I have chosen the third photo from the bottom. In this picture there is a woman in a blue shirt standing in a bathroom in front of a closed shower curtain. The figure has drawings on her face and chest. The drawings are outlining zits and making them the main focus of the photograph. This causes us to confront something that most women would cover up, not show off. This series is very interesting in that way. The outlines around the zits create shapes, mostly circles. The outlines also create a sort of pattern that is beautiful although what is outlined is not considered beautiful.

LINDSEY- I have chosen the picture of broccoli in Lindsey’s Going Green photo series. The broccoli is the most prominent part of the picture and it is green. The title of this series would suggest that the photos would be about being more environmentally friendly, which is the trend in today’s world. But the pictures of things that are green instead of environmentally friendly products. So, the photos and the title almost contradict themselves because you think one thing and get another.

MELISSA- I have chosen photo number nineteen. In this photo there are three green circles. These circles look like they were created from a lighted object and using a slower shutter speed. You can’t really tell what’s in the photo, except that light was involved. The picture looks more like a painting than a photograph, which fits with the title of the series “Paint by Shutter.” The photos are very beautiful and the composition of the photo works well. It is balanced and the colors are vibrant.

NICK- I have chosen the photo that has ‘ECHO’ in it. This photo is a close up of a car. It has the word ‘echo’ in it, which describes what type of car it is. But the whole car cannot be seen in the picture, so we are left to wonder what exactly an Echo is. The car itself is white and part of the break light is in the picture, which provides a spot of color in the picture. This picture is about the words that describe a car rather than what brand it is.

SKY-I have chosen the third picture from the bottom. The picture is very pixilated, which is what the series is about. The objects in the photo are not recognizable. There are squares of color, such as yellow, blue, pink, green and some neutral colors. There are two main blocks of color in the picture. There is a yellow and a blue block of color. This photo is about taking pictures of objects that are recognizable and pixilating them to the point of being unrecognizable.

SOUNG- I have chosen photo ten on the bottom row of pictures. In this photo and hand with purple paint on it is grabbing a white shirt. The shirt has other colors on it that look like they were smeared there. The hand with paint on it is adding another color to the shirt. This photo fits with the title of the series. It is interesting to see that the photographer has taken a white shirt, white being a pure color, and messing it up with paint and other things. It is no longer a ‘pure’ shirt.

  26. Sorry I'm just getting around to posting my critiques. I'm on vacation and my computer just started back working. It says I have too many charachters, but I am working on taking out a few words.

  28. Caitlin,

I had to post three different ones. You don't have to take anything out, you just have to figure out how much you can fit in one comment, then it should be fine. :)

  30. Alex- Second - This is a close up shot of a brightly colored, yellow, piece of fabric. It looks to me like a blanket or a thick sweater. The first thing that catches my eye as I'm scrolling the page are the many shadows I see throughout the picture. The contrast between light and dark makes for a very beautiful photograph. The picture is very simple and modern.

Brittany- First - I see an old, possibly abandoned home, standing alone, in what appears to be a wooded area. The roof is shredded, along with the sides of the house. The first thing that catches my eye is the writing on the windows, "you are beautiful." I get the feeling that the person that once lived here was very isolated from the outside world.

Christine: First - I'm not exactly sure what the subject matter is, but the colors are very appealing. The back of the photo is very dark and blurry, it contrast to the front, that is well lit and sort of pops out at the viewer. The hint of blue compliments the white and black very nicely.

Crystal: second - I see three, ready to eat, boxes of pizza lying slightly tilted on a black counter top. The picture is not very busy, which makes your focus remain solely on the pizza boxes. The caption under the picture states "all for me." I immediately think, "this girl is a beast, or she just has a HUGE appetite!"

Danielle: Third - I see what appears to be the back end of a water bottle. At first glance, it's hard to figure out what exactly I am looking at. The photo is much more out of focus towards the front, but then suddenly, it's very clear in the back. It seems to be saying there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Elaine: Fourth - I see a ceiling hand made of bamboo. The center of the ceiling slopes down creating a focal point for the picture. I believe this to be a hut of some sort, maybe on the beach.

Gina: Third - I see a light, blue street sign that reads- Anchorage. Below the blue sign is a yellow sign that reads dead end. To the right of the street sign is half of a white picket fence that shows up well next to the dark grass and trees. Below the picture is the definition of anchorage which to me is saying the street name has a background.

Ian: Second - This is of a girl's who's face has been digitally altered in photo shop. The girl is smiling a very sweet smile in the background, and holding a mask of her face, which is much closer. The mask makes the picture not so sweet anymore. It seems as if the girls is in some sort of pain or agony.

Josh: First - The photo is titled Everything In It's Right Place. The picture is of two arrows that had been painted on street, facing in opposite directions of each other. You have to look closely for the areas because they have been there for quite some time, fading into the pavement.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Juleah: First - This is a picture of a girl portraying herself as a doll, draped over a treadmill. The treadmill sits in the middle of a garage between two cars. The "doll" seems to be out of place, like someone left her there by mistake, or maybe she is no longer of importance.

Kyla: fourth - I see a picture of girl standing in a bathroom, looking directly into the camera, with a blank stare on her face. It is obvious that this girl has been battling an issue with blemishes for quite sometime. She is now ready to share this with the outside world. Each zit is circled with brown eye liner to make them stand out. There appears to be some sort of writing in the center of her forehead. I believe it reads- POW. I'm not really sure how to interpret the writing.

Lindsey: fifth photo- In this picture my attention is first drawn to the bright, green rope. I then find myself looking at the background, which appears to be a net. The net is white, which makes the green stand out. I believe this is a cast net, since I am familiar with them. The curves throughout the rope really add movement to the picture.

Melissa: - In this photograph I seen many bright blues, pinks, and purples. The light blue stands out above the rest. This photo reminds me of what I see after looking into a bright light, and then closing my eyes. It also reminds me of an intense lightning storm, mostly seen at the beach, minus the bright colors.

Nick: 7th from bottom- I see a close up shot of an older model car that I'm not familiar with. The focal point of the picture is obviously the name of the car, which reads- AERIO. Being an advertising major, my first thought when looking at the picture is an advertisement for that particular brand of car.

Sarah: 55 ft - I see a girl sitting ever so gracefully along a side walk, wrapped up in a book. It appears that she does not have a care in the world. If you look closely at the photo you will notice her sister in the background, standing 55 ft away. If I was not told before hand that was her sister, I would have considered it to be a ghost.

Sky: 9th from the top- I can't make out exactly what the picture is, but I see blue at the top and green at the bottom, so I'm guessing the sky and grass is involved. The photo has been altered in a way that it looks very pixilated.

Soung: 25 from the left- I see a guy standing with his back to the camera, gazing off into the distance. There is a mirror in front of the guy, so his reflection appears. He is wearing a white shirt that has been painted on several times. The guy seems to be very proud, having a tall stance.

  32. Alex: (brown11) the brown field of color appears to be the hair of a woman seen very close up in substantial detail. In modernist theory, the individual’s hair is the center of the picture from what we can see.
Brittany: (tape2) the black and white photo shows the mouth of a woman covered with duct tape as she holds a microphone in an attempt to speak her voice. From a feminist perspective I see what appears to be a woman as she attempts to speak her mind while simultaneously being silenced by a stronger authority.
Caitlin: (100_1290) here we see the feet of a woman in pink pumps as she places one foot on a shovel in an attempt to dig a hole in the earth. Naturally, from a feminist point of view I imagine the strength and power of a very womanly female as she displays her ability to live in a man’s world.
Christine: (100_2751) this brightly colored photo shows us a street scene with two red lights at what appears to around twilight. Because we see this through front windshield of a car with a bit of the dashboard at the bottom the conventionalist theory applies in that we are seeing a particular perspective at an exact moment in time.
Crystal: (SDC13593-1-1) in this photo we see several cans on a shelf in a grocery store including Campbell’s & Chef Boyardee with prices set below them. This photo’s faithfulness to reality allows the application of realist theory because this is exactly what we would see if we were to walk into any grocery store.
Danielle: (100_2075) this photo shows us a toilet with the lid up in mid flush seen from the eyes of a person as they hover over it. This precise perspective captures a fleeting moment seen only from the viewer.
Elaine: (Mall1) Here we see a white ceiling with a yellow diamond shape at the center that has two black lines crossing through creating an X shape. Surrounding the yellow shape are thick black squares that create squares around centering the diamond. From the ceiling hang four white lamps that dangle from the yellow diamond shape. The minimal use of color and shape give the ceiling a modern feel.
Ian: (mollymask) this photo shows a female with bright blue eyes, dark brown hair, wearing a blue shirt with little to no expression on her face. Next to her is a picture of her face with the eyes and mouth black out, as well as what looks like a Popsicle stick coming from the neck. The image that is next to the girl appears to be a mask with a volatile look on her face that she might be holding in her hand. The girl is clearly the center of the image, allowing the application of modernist theory.
Josh: (lucky) two blue die are the center of this image. They have landed on a two and five and appear in the upper right hand corner of the photo. A light from the same corner casts two long bluish-grey shadows on the surface. The photo is very minimal, but also very beautiful.
Juleah: (JMC_Doll_15) here a girl wearing a beautiful blue and white floral dress sits in a brown chair like a rag doll with a brown dresser behind her. There is little expression on her face as she sits with her lifeless arms at her sides and head tilted slights to her left.
Kyla: (day22) standing in profile view we see a female in a green shirt as she stands in her bathroom. She has circled the acne on her face in brown pencil in order to draw attention to this problem.
Lindsey: (1) here we see a bathroom scene, at the center of the image is a bottle of mascara that emphasizes the neon green cap. It sits on a roll of toilet paper and is surrounded by other toiletry items on the counter.
Melissa: (DSC-0360-1) this photo shows an abstract use of the color purple as it appears on a dark blue background. A short-lived moment in time is captured beautifully.

  33. Alex – (image titled brown11) This image captures a multitude of different strands of brown hair. A variety of shades and tones of brown are found. Each strand appears to have its own unique color and in some areas the color has been affected by the camera’s flash and other lighting issues. The photograph follows along with the artist’s intent of capturing color absent of real subject matter.

Caitlin – (image titled DSC00046) The image features a pair of leopard print high heels which are hung on a chain link fence. One of the shoes faces the camera and the other faces the opposite direction. While the image is landscape, it is taken at a left skewed angle. The image seems to convey an idea of nature meeting elegance with a possible hint of sexual flair. The femininity of the shoes seems to be meshing with an environment that may be conventionally masculine. The photo is functional in conveying the artist’s idea of the series.

Christine – (image titled 3722198420_7df97523cf) It is square in shape and taken from a right skewed angle. It appears to be an image of the floor and lower portion of a wall in a house. A tan carpeted floor makes up the left side of the photograph. Small parts of an entertainment center, post, plastic bag, and a bookshelf are all found on the right side of the photograph. A long shutter was used to capture this image because some of it is blurred and a variety of lighting and colors may be found surrounding objects. It serves to fulfill the artist’s statement of intent.

Crystal – (image titled SDC13307) A girl is featured in this photograph opening a refrigerator door and looking inside. It appears as if the subject is wearing nighttime clothing and the room is dark. The light from the refrigerator brightens up the area and creates a silhouette of the girl. Blue lights shine on the freezer door but the viewer cannot distinguish what they are for. The darkness and attire show that the subject is awake for a midnight snack and is unsure of what she wants to eat. It is somewhat disproportionate and unbalanced because both the lighting and the subject are found on one side of the image while the other side is dark and bare. However, it does not seem to be a problem because it leaves mystery as to what is in the refrigerator and in the kitchen.

  34. Danielle – (image titled 100_2617) Water is streaming out of a water hose pointed up at the sky. The water shoots up into the air but gives into gravity and arches down towards the grass. The water pressure is not set high so it almost creates an illusion of glass. Everything in this photograph is out of focus except for the subject matter itself. Water is the main focus and where the viewers’ eyes are drawn to as the hose and background are all blurred.

Elaine – (image titled P6070204) It appears as if this photograph has been taken underneath some type of boardwalk while looking up. The viewer sees a series of boards completing a walkway above. The sky peaks through the gaps between the boards. Shadows from these boards shoot straight down creating a variety of lines in different angels. This photograph is visually appealing because of all of the lines and different directions of them. It completes the artist’s visionary of capturing ceilings and serves to be an appealing image.

Gina – (image titled Andy Rosse) This is a photograph of the street sign for Andy Rosse Ln. The artist has provided text underneath the image though it has been cut off due to HTML coding issues. The street sign is blue in color which signifies a private street. Behind the sign is a wooden fence which has been painted tan. On top of the tan color there are bubbles painted on in green, pink, purple, blue, and yellow along with a sign saying “Bubble Room 150 Feet Ahead.” Green trees saturate the area above the sign and fence. The bright colors are the most appealing in this image.

Ian – (image titled decel) This photograph is composed of two separate images of one male. This male’s face appears twice – once is of a serious nature and the other is more emotionally expressive. The straight faced image is out of focus and in the background where as the expressive image is in focus and the forefront of the viewer’s attention. The expressive image is a cut out of the face and does not include a neck or body of the individual but instead it has a small tan bar which appears to be a wooden stick to represent the handle of a mask. This is a strong sample of many which convey the artist’s idea of an alter ego which is displayed through such images.

Josh – (image titled anyonecanplayguitar) I’m studying a black and white photograph of an up close electric guitar which is being strummed. You can see part of the musician’s pants and shirt along with their hang but no more because the photograph has been taken close up. A longer shutter speed has been used to display motion in the hand which is strumming. Not only does the extended shutter speed show the motion of playing the guitar but it also creates a bit of a blur throughout the image which further accentuates the notion of an electric guitar.
Juleah – (image titled JMC_Doll_58_BK) A bookshelf serves as the background while the female is placed drooped over the shelving. The subject is relaxed to the point of being unconscious – which instills a doll-like quality. This positioning displays a great sense of vulnerability simply in the way that the owner may have placed her. It does follow in suit with the artist’s concept for this series.

Kyla – (image titled day39) This photograph features the subject up close and looking into the camera as if it were a mirror. The subject appears to be popping a pimple on her face while multiple brown markings on her face circle and highlight marks which she believes to be blemishes. The artist statement describes a possibility of imagining an excess of blemish which really do not exist to such an extent. This image portrays such a concept.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lindsey – (image titled b7) A photograph of a city water cover. The cover is green in color with ridges across the top. Along with the ridges reads the word “water” in capital letters. The depths of the ridges are a darker green color while the rest is more of a mint green. Behind the cover is a circle which has been filled with dead orange leaves and a gray pavement. The image is appealing because of the rustic feel and shadows.

Melissa – (image DSC013j3) An extended shutter speed has been used to capture an image of an astronaut suit with the American flag in the background. The overall tone of the image is dark and orange. A light shines out from the right side of the image which, with the exception of the light, is a very dark area. Along with the long shutter it appears as if the artist has zoomed in at the moment of open shutter which creates a larger abd blurrier silhouette around the astronaut suit. The photograph is certainly a good example of different uses of shutter speed which has fulfilled the artist’s intent.

Nick – (image titled 26) The top portion of the photograph is composed of the lower portion of a white Ford Mustang with a tan stripe. The Mustang is resting on a gray pavement with a white road line parallel to the bottom of the car. The lines in the image all follow the same direction and give the viewer’s eye guidance in what to look at.

Sarah – (image titled 41) The main subject of the photograph stands close to the camera in a blue dress while holding a blue, red, and yellow umbrella. The subject is standing in the midst of a field with scattered debris but is looking a way from the camera. Further in the background is another individual who is also holding an umbrella and seems to be looking into the camera. The main subject has a slight smile on her face. The photograph shows a girl who is standing apart from someone else and being her own which is what the artist intended.

Sky – (image tittled sunset2) A portrait style photograph is displayed of a setting sun. The horizon line sits a little above the center of the image. The pixilation has been distorted so much that the details are no longer relevant or apparent. The coloring and overall outline of the pieces in the photograph do allow the view to distinguish the subject matter. This accurately accomplishes the artist’s goal.

Soung -- The image I’m looking at is on the top row and is the 22nd in. It is a photograph of an individual wearing the shirt while standing in front of a white fence with colorful images painted on it. Graffiti is found on both the t-shirt and the fence in the background. The colors are bright and the image is sharp and clear. It works well with the overall concept.

  36. alex- looking at your second picture with the diagonal shadow running through the mustard
yellow fabric. this pic is filled with texture, line and color. It is very abstract
while also taking on characteristics of a landscape. I really enjoy how this particular pic
shows a variety of yellows even though the fabric is all the same color.

Brittany- ur pic with the old decrepid house with the graffitti writing on the windows is very
symbolic. the grafitti is kind of condescending to thecondition of the house since it is old
and broken down. the graffitti says you are beautiful is used with obvious irony since the house
would not normally be beautiful to most people. i like it though because it makes you think
beyond the photo to the actual house. at one point somebody built it and did think i t was beautiful and it
makes you wonder what itused to look like.

Caitlin- the photo with the 4 ballerinas all moving in various poses is very soft and delicate.
it portrays these ballerinas exactly how i would imagine when thinking of the word "ballerina".
I would say this would fit in the feminist art category. Ballet has always been related more to females
and has been a common factor that ties most females together seeing as how many have participated
in at one point in their lives.

Christine-this image is of maybe plants or sticks coming out of a slender vase and the shadow of the
piece is casted on the white wall behind. to me this image is kindof abstract but at the same time
recognizable. The lines really work well as they almost form into the shadows so you cant tell where
the actual object ends and the shadow begins. the colors add a fantasy like effect to the pic while the
diagonals make for a great composition.

Danielle- the picture is of a hand squeezing an orange rag with water dripping off. the background looks
to be in a backyard with grass and a fence. beautiful picture because the quick shutter speed really froze
the water and made it photograph into abstract liquid shapes. The closeness of the hand and rag really show
texture and short field of depth which plays nicely with the lines in the background.

Elaine- The photo with the many square windows illuminated by glowing lanterns really expresses a minimalist
approach the photo is similar to a grid which has been used throughout art. the photo is comprised of mostly square elements with small hints of roundess. the diagonals and shapes
really make up a great composition.

    ReplyDelete
  37. josh- your photo with the two opposite cracked arrows painted on the concrete is very contempary in style. I realy
think the cracks play up the two arrows and almost connect them though they are on opposite sides of the pic.
the natural grayscale paired with the hardness of the concrete adds to the cold feeling of the pic.

juleah- the pic of you laying on the freezer kinda of draped over it has a very intimate feeling. it also
touches on the feminist aspect of being seen as a fraile female almost doll like. the black and white color choice
also adds to that intimate feeling. your pose is very innocent almost as if your wondering or looking at something

Kyla- your photo of urself with your hair in a bun and 4 zits on your face and one on your chest reminds me of
a socio theory piece. you are able to show the unflattering things to people and each person will
have a different expereince and feeling when viewing the pics. it could also be a self reflecting piece
where in you are accepting yourself as you are.

Melissa- the photo of what seems to be a flag and an astronaut is very impressionistic. the light rays blur the
two objects together to appear as one. It also has many abstract qualities to it. the light effect in the middle
looks like a starburs with goes with the stars on the flag in the upper left corner.
the colors also add a surreal effect to the pic

Nick- the pic is mostly red with word titan written in upper caps in silver ontop of a row of black diagonal lines.
the photo is more abstract in nature since it is a close up and not much information can be seen. the separation of
black and red forms a diagonal as well as the small lines that make up the black bottom part of the pic

Sarah- ur pic is of you laying down horizontally next to a circular lake with trees surrounding it. this picture is
almost purist in form since your dealing with the nearly ideal landscape type(body of water, trees, reflection, sky, & etc.) you have
a middle, foreground and background in your pic and the lines of trees and fence
make a nice frame and composition

sky-the pic of the sunset which has been pixelated is almost impressionistic. it is pixelated just
enough so you can see the seperation of colors and recognize what the picture is.it
also reminds me of photo montage because it looks to be made up of small squares.

soung- the pic of the shirt hanging on the fence is very contemporary. it seems to be some
sort of self expression while at the same time evoking an abstract expressionist approach.
the white shirt and the neutral background really make your colors stand out

  38. **From Nick Miller:

-ALEX – I am deconstructing the second photo in Alex’s series titled, “yellow9.jpg”. It is displayed as a very large photo and it consists of a close up shot of some sort of fabric. It appears to be a photo of a sweater, t-shirt, sock or blanket. It is too hard to tell because it was taken at such a close distance that the lens must have been only a couple of inches away from the material when taken. The photo itself shows a lot of mystery to it because of the many dark areas that you embedded within the folds of the blanket. The folds of the blanket almost appear to be dark tunnels running through out the blanket. To me they represent the tunnels of life and the many directions one has to be able to travel through life.

-BRITTANY – The photo I choose to deconstruct is titled, “dance6.jpg”. In this photo there is a young blond boy standing on top of a car that is parked in a no parking zone. The young boy is about 10 or 11 years of age and appears to be dancing and possibly singing and is not wearing a t-shirt. It seems as if he is care free and out of control. This photo appears to show a lack of respect for authority and rules. First off, the car is parked in a no parking zone which shows a lack of respect for the rules of the road. Secondly, the boy is unsupervised and has no care in the world as to the rules that are set forth upon him by his parents or elders.

-CAITLIN – The photo I choose is the forth photo from the top and is titled, “100_3218.JPG”. This photo is of a young lady possibly in her late teens or early to mid twenties. The photo shows the young lady hovering above the camera and lifting her foot in the air as if she is about to step on the camera. She is wearing a sneaker on her foot and is looking down at the camera while she is raising her leg. The expression on her face reminds me a lot of Godzilla and the destruction that he did to the city below in many of his films. She looks a little mad and is about to step on the observer. The photo was obviously taken from below, so it shows the lady in a superior state hovering above the observer.

-CHRISTINE – The photo that I have chosen is the eighth photo from the top and is titled, “recyclablepot.jpg”. This is a photo of a flower or plant that is growing out of a flower pot. The plant is green and the flower pot has an orange color to it. On the flower pot there is a sticker that that reads “recyclable pot”. This photo shows the cycle of life and how life grows out of the ground and then goes back into the ground after it dies. The same with the pot. The pot is made from recycled materials and is reused again through recycling, over and over. Nothing is wasted and this system helps the environment.

-CRYSTAL – The first photo from the top is titled, “eating on the go”. It shows a person holding a drink from a fast food restaurant and some sort of food item. The photo was taken from the point of view of the person holding the drink and food, so you can not see the persons face. All you can see is the persons hand and the tips of their toes. It shows the person holding these while at the same time walking to a destination. This photo is a metaphor for how our country works on a daily basis. As a culture we are a busy group of people who constantly are multitasking to get as much done as possible in a short amount of time. With our busy lifestyles sometimes we risk damaging our health to save time by eating at fast food restaurants or convenience stores.

-DANIELLE – The photo that I choose to deconstruct is the third photo from the bottom and is titled, “100_2607.jpg”. This photo shows just the shoulders and the head of a man. The man appears to be without a shirt and is spitting water all the way up into the air. The man is having a good time and is refreshing himself as well. It also shows the cleaning effects of water on ones gums and teeth as well.

    ReplyDelete
  39. -ELAINE – The photo I choose is the one of the exit sign titled, “blurry-1.jpg”. The photo consists of a blurry exit sign attached to the ceiling and the photo leads you to look down the hallway ceiling at all of the lights. This photo has ones eyes looking past the exit sign almost as if exiting isn’t even an option, but that there is still more to come beyond the exit sign.

-GINA – The photo I choose to deconstruct for Gina is number 58 in her series and is titled, “Osceola”. Within the photo there is a street sign that was taken during dusk or dawn. The name of the street on the street sign is Osceola Drive. The description that she gives as to who Osceola is is the leader of the Seminole Indians. Within the photo there is a light post right behind the street sign. The street within the photo is creating a glare of some sort that stretches across about half of the photo. That glare changes everything within the photo. It is located right behind the street sign, so it puts a lot of emphasis right on the street sign itself. The glare creates an emotional feeling within you. The glare looks almost like a spiritual aura surrounding the street sign. It almost seems as if Osceola’s spirit is right there within the photo.

-IAN – The photo for Ian that I am deconstructing is the 5th one from the top of Josh. The photo consists of Josh looking into the camera and there is a second photo within that one. That second photo is attached to a wooden stick to make it look as if Josh is holding up a picture of himself. That picture of himself shows him making an exaggerated grin right into the camera. Right behind Josh is a picture that is attached to the wall of someone else. That person appears to be looking at Josh and wondering what Josh is up to.

-JOSH – The photo that I choose for Josh is titled, “everything in its right place”. It is a photo that consists of a close up of a street and two arrows on that street going in opposite directions. Both arrows are large in size and colored white. The arrows represent the rules that are society sets for us to obey on a daily basis. It is almost as if our society tells us which direction to take in life beyond just the rules of the road.

-JULEAH – The photo I choose is titled, “JMC_Doll_12.jpg” and is a picture of Juleah lying right on top of a dresser. The photo shows Juleah in a very exhausted and tired state. The photo resembles the stress and anxiety that many women go through to look good, especially when it comes to clothing. Many women in this country almost have to compete with each especially when it comes to clothing. The tired look on Juleah’s face as well as the dresser makes that point.

-KYLA -- The picture I choose is of Kyla looking into a mirror with the word “none” written backwards on her forehead. She is wearing an orange colored dress within the photo. The word “none” signifies that there is nothing going on in her day. There might have been more interesting things going the day before, but on that day there was nothing going on too interesting for her to make note of.

-LINDSEY – The photo I choose consists of a large green flotation device floating around in a pool. Surrounding the pool are numerous green trees. The flotation device is a direct correlation with the green trees in the sense that both represent a sense of relaxation and calmness. Both are working together to eventually relieve the stress of whoever is going to decided to use the pool.

-MELISSA – The photo I choose is of a space suit that is standing next to an American flag. The photo was edited to make it look as if the space man is moving really quickly with a lot of fast motion. This photo resembles the life and times of the astronauts that are hurdled through space. Being blasted into space and traveling back and forth through out outer space, astronauts go through much exciting, but turbulent moments.

    ReplyDelete
  40. -SARAH – The photo I choose for Sarah is titled, “Sixty-Three Feet”. This photo shows Sarah lying on the ground outside right next to what appears to be a small lake or a pond. This photo resembles the concept of evolution and how man had evolved. Some say that humans have evolved from the fish in the ocean and rivers. This photo shows to some extent the process that humans went through to evolve from fish into intellectual human beings.

-SKY – The photo that I choose for Sky is the first one his 84 series blog. It consists of four people standing next to each other and the picture appears to be pixilated. This photo resembles what I have to go through when I am not wearing my glasses. Much of what I see when I don’t have my glasses on appears to be pixilated or very blurry.

-SOUNG – The photo that I choose to deconstruct for Soung is the forth photo in the second row. The photo has Soung wearing a white shirt. The photo shows Soung looking over his right shoulder while there is red paint being pored on top of it. The red paint is then flowing down his back. This photo resembles the idea that someone can easily stab someone in the back and take advantage of them. The red paint resembles blood. In many horror films the color red resembles some sort of evil or evil doing.

ALEX- (38th picture from the bottom) This is a close-up picture of a brown paper bag. The photo is so close-up that you can see the actual texture of the material that makes up the bag. The lighting on the bag allows you to see the crisp crinkles and creases in the bag. The large scale of the picture functions very well because it forces the viewer to search through the picture in order to fully observe and appreciate the simple yet detailed aspects of the picture. This picture fits into modern photography because the subject of the picture has simply been found by the artist and rendered objectively.
BRITTANY- (peace sign in trash can) This photo shows a peace sign written on a piece of paper and thrown away into a trash can with other pieces of paper. The trash can has been tipped over on its side with the trash spilling out. This photo seems to suggest that peace is a “piece of trash”. But, when more closely observing the photo one may begin to realize that the photo may also suggest that people take the peace they have for granted and treat their right to live in peace as a piece of trash. The bold black lines of the peace sign contrasting against the white tones of the rest of the photo function well to give the photo a clear focal point. This photo could be discussed from a post modernist approach because the contents of the photo have been staged and constructed in a way that would suggest certain ideas to the viewer.
CAITLIN- (girl in white skirt wearing sneakers) In this picture the subject is walking along a brick wall wearing a white skirt and a pair of black sneakers. The contrast between the masculine sneakers and the feminine white skirt catches your eye. This picture can definitely function as part of feminist theory. The girl wearing the sneakers and walking along a fairly high brick wall shows that this girl has broken out of the constraints of how women are expected in society to present themselves.
CHRISTINE- (close-up of green leaf and yellow flower) This picture shows a close-up of a green leaf and a yellow flower that is brightly lit up by the sunlight. The background is out of focus giving the picture a nice depth of field. The picture seems so simple yet the beauty of the light touching the flower gives the picture that extra touch which adds interest to the picture. The story of the picture seems to tell us that even though some things in life are so simple they can be the most beautiful things in life and we should not take them for granted.
CRYSTAL- (best idea ever) This photo shows a bag of chips, a sandwich wrapper, and a purse thrown onto the seat of a car. The colors of these items function very well and are what add interest to the photo. This photo fits very well into feminist theory. Even though Crystal eats tons of food that is unhealthy, because she is so skinny she is still stereotyped by society that she doesn’t eat.
ELAINE- (Blue and green ceiling) This is a picture of a ceiling that is green and blue. The ceiling almost looks like it is part of a kite. The colors of the ceiling look beautiful against the blue sky which you can see where the ceiling breaks at certain points. I have chosen to discuss the aspects of this photo from a modernist point of view. This picture fits in well with the modernist point of view because the artist has not invented the subject in the photo. The artist has merely used her creative abilities to think outside of the box and take pictures of objects that are not usually noticed by the everyday person but are objects that are already there. This photo fits the modernist view because it also has not been altered. The colors are beautiful simply because of the artists ability to use the camera. The artist has used this photo as a way to simply show the beautiful things in life that are constantly in our presence but we do not notice.

  42. GINA- (Tahitian Blvd.) This picture shows a street sign with the words Tahitian Blvd. on it. The font of the text on the sign is not typical of the usual font you would see on street signs. A long little white fence runs back from the street sign along the road. To me this picture fits into the multicultural theory perspective. The text on the sign shows the vast culture that you can find in the United States. The multicultural theory embraces the traditions of cultures and also the equality of these cultures.
IAN- (5th picture down from the top) This picture shows the subject holding a mask that is of his own face with the mouth and eye holes empty. The subject is slightly blurred in the background allowing the mask to stand out. This picture could be discussed in terms of photographic truth and whether the digital altering of the photograph alters the truth of the photo. Even though some may think that the truth of the photo may be harmed when doing this, I believe that this photo actually reveals more truth than one would normally see in a photograph.
JOSH- (meeting in the aisle) This picture shows an empty parking lot with only a few remaining shopping carts occupying the lot. The parking lot gives a feeling of isolation and loneliness with the one lonely shopping cart that is in the foreground of the picture. This picture touches on the “truth” of photography because the photo automatically triggers certain feelings and emotions by the way the photograph was taken. The meaning of photographs can be completely controlled and altered when things are photographed a certain way. This is when the issue of truth comes into play.

KYLA- (7th photo down from the top) In this portrait of Kyla she stands in front of a shower curtain in the bathroom looking slightly downward in a daze. She has a zit circled with eye liner right in the middle of her forehead. This zit seems to be the only one on her face at that moment. I would like to talk about this photo from a feminist perspective. This photo fits into the feminist perspective because it shows the "real side" of being a women. In today's society women are expected to have that perfect smooth skin when in fact in the real world we all know that is rarely the case. Women face the humility of having imperfections on their skin on a day to day basis. This photo seems to give the viewer a sense of relief by allowing the viewer to see into the artist's personal life and by being able to relate to this aspect of their life. It is a bold move and makes the statement that women do not need to be ashamed of something that almost everyone deals with just because they are expected to look a certain way.
LINDSEY- (2nd photo from beginning) This photo shows bubbles in some sort of a green liquid. The varying sizes of the bubbles add an interesting perspective to the picture. This picture functions as a piece of modern photography. This is because the photo is rendered clearly and true to its form.
MELISSA- (month of may, 5th down from the top) This picture captures light in an interesting way and creates the illusion that the light is creating circles. The color of the light in the picture are very vibrant and beautiful. This photo functions as a piece of postmodernist photography. The artist has created the subject matter of the photo and has created their own method of photography/

SUONG-The fifth picture from the left is the picture I would like to comment on. In this picture Soung's foot is caught in the action of foot printing paint onto a t-shit. The crinkles of the skin on the foot and the wrinkles of the shirt lead your eye throughout the photo smoothly. The bright colors of the paint contrast well with the white t-shirt and the black paint on the foot in the center of the image helps to focus your eye in the craziness that is brought about by the vivid colors. I would like to talk about this picture from a postmodernism perspective. The aspects of this photo fit in very well with this perspective because the artist has completely invented the subject matter. In fact, the photo shows the artist in the action of inventing the subject matter. The idea of putting paint on his foot and then smashing it on the t-shirt shows the artist pursuing his own method of photography in an effort to construct this photo.
