Hello!

Thank you all so much for a fabulous class! I couldn't be more please with the outcome. I hope you all were able to accomplish your goals and also learned a few unexpected things along the way!

It was a pleasure to get to know each of you and look forward to seeing you in the Fall!

Those of you interested in the Photo Show we are planning, I will be in touch around the second week of classes and we will plan it together--probably on a Wed or Thursday night!

Be well and email me if you have any problems!

Final Weeks!

Hello Gang.

All I need from you now is for you to finalize your 84 blogs and professionalize your books.
See the post below for directions to order your books.
Again, those of you that are making handmade books should upload a picture of your final product.

If any of you would like to know your standing in the class, email me and we can discuss it at length.

Hope you all are well and let me know if I can help you in any way during these last few weeks!

There has been some great things accomplished here! Great job everybody!

Homework Due July 21st and 22nd

BOOKS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5TH BY MIDNIGHT!!!!

Go to blurb.com and log in with this info:
User name: jfeysa
Password: feysageorge

Then upload your file. Jennifer will purchase them on Friday, August 7th. I will let you know when they arrive so that you may go retrieve them.

If you art NOT ordering a book, but making your own, I will expect you to post images of your handmade books under the comments section of that weeks post (not layouts, but photos of the 3d objects themselves).

Again, I would really like for us to have an opening for our books in the first 2 weeks of Fall Quarter. Not mandatory, just fun times!

SO FOR TUESDAY JULY 21ST!
Please post layouts on your book blogs for us to review and critique your progress. You will have only this week and next week to complete your book with our help so kick it into HI Gear! If you have any questions, email me, but I was pleased with the layouts that you all did the very last time we attempted this, so continue in that vein.

I have lost a few of you. You know who you are. This is your last week to contact me to make arrangements for an extended deadline. If I do not hear from you, or there is not a miraculous turn around on your blogs and participation, prepare yourself for your final grade. It will not be pretty.

I was very pleased with the caliber of this weeks critiques. You all are so much stronger in your practice, it is very evident in the way you see photos, make photos, and discuss them. I am still proud!

July 14th and 15th

 UH OH!
Gang. Wow. I am sorry for the confusion. I messed up by telling you to put it under their most recent post. I meant under my most recent post.

SO, lets try that one again.  Aside from the frustration we got kind of a free week?

AGAIN, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE CRITIQUE FROM THE POST BELOW.
HOWEVER, PLACE YOUR CRITS UNDER !THIS! COMMENT SECTION.

There is no need to add back your comment section on your 84 Blog.

Sorry guys, that was my bad!

ABOUT OUR BOOKS
The art secretary has made an account for all of us. After a few looks and crits of the books and finalized layouts, we will all upload them to her account and she will pay for them. We still have some time so keep working on them!

This work is all looking incredible and you should all be proud! I am!

Homework for July 7th and 8th!

This week I would like you to choose ONE photo from EACH of your classmates 84 Series Blog and "deconstruct" that photo only. Please do so under the above post.

I would like you to choose a voice that is appropriate for the your approach to deconstructing the photograph. (feminist critique, marxist critique, etc.) Refer back to your handout if necessary. Remember, I specifically asked that you save it for this reason.

This is an imperative practice, as it give the artists multiple reads of what the audience actually sees, and not what the artist wants them to see. Also, it is huge for you as it is a practice in "truly seeing".

Organize your paragraph like so.
First, describe every aspect of the photo. Tell us what is there as if you were talking to someone who cannot see.
Then, choose a position, and use that voice to form an observation about what all aspects of the photo you have just described, function. What is its story? What could it mean?

Just try.

Homework for June 30th and July 1st!

OK Gang,
You have gotten stellar feedback from your peers. Use it and try again. Make at least 3 different from and back covers for your book if it is applicable to you, using that fabulous feedback. Please visit Rezvan and Sam (who are great graphic designers) if you are in need of support.

Christine has a very good example of what is expected to complete my expectations (not the layout or font or idea)--just the fact that she made an image that includes the title, text and image in a solid layout structure for crit. All of you should be present an equivalent example inherent with your own personal layout.

Statements must be nailed down at this point. You are all close. Last time I swear.

Homework Due June 23rd and 24th

Hey Gang! This work is looking good! Keep it up!

To clarify again: do not crit anything unless I ask for it specifically. I will ask specifically for what I want you to do on each weeks blog. You only have to crit what it is that I ask for. So I am sorry for any confusion or extra work that you did. (it is good practice, and not a waste)

So, I know it feels early to get into this already but I promise, we will need the time.
If you haven't already, choose a size of your book. Clarify that size on your blog.

What I would like you to do is layout your front and back covers of your book. It is time to consider a title, font, and graphic design. You may only have a photo on the front, and no text--that is fine, but go ahead and design that layout.

Make a decision about your artist statement, and where it might go. Traditionally they go on the inside of the front cover and can also be placed on the back cover. (You do not have to have a statement in your book, but it is encouraged for most projects, but you DO have to provide a solid statement on your blog. If you have been asked to revisit your statement, now is the time.)

I realize that some of you still may not have an image for a front or back cover--in that instance just give us a sketch and label it as such. There are still many crucial decisions that you can begin to address.

To crit your peers on their book blogs underneath the post that houses these assigned layouts:
Pay special attention to the statement--feedback there is crucial.
Suggestions for stronger layouts, text and photo sizes, fonts and font colors are all expected.
Challenge yourselves and each other--be brave in your design!

Homework Due June 16th and 17th

Let's switch gears and critique the 84 Blogs. There are some great things happening there!
(Do that by commenting on this post with a list of crits for everyone.)

I am very pleased with the quality of these crits so far! Excellent work!

We will begin to work on layout soon, so do some sketches!

Hope you all are well. San Francisco Rules.

Homework Due June 9th and 10th

Hello everyone,

Keep up the good work, take the advice of your peers and keep working. It is looking good, keep up the momentum!

Keep working on your statements!

Please give appropriate feedback on the books. Some of the feedback is not critical enough. Remember that "critical" does not have a negative tone in this setting. It simply means that the veiwer deconstructs the images with a keen eye and vocabulary. It is helpful to be nit picky!

We will NOT be reviewing the 84 series this week, only the book. You still must upload the new images to 84 for me to grade.

Please note that Ian may be absent for a bit, as he is dealing with a family emergency. Wish him well, and we will get him back on track when he is up to rejoining the class.
